Job description

Starting from 1 October 2014, we have a postdoc position available within the Department of Geography of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium. The to be hired candidate will become a member of the research group Cosmopolis Centre for Urban Research and will fulfil teaching duties within the Bachelor- and Master programmes in Geography (the latter an interuniversity Master with the KU Leuven) and the Erasmus Mundus Master 4Cities.

Concretely, this will involve the temporary replacement of the current professor Bas van Heur for three or four of the following courses: Sociale Geografie (BSc Geografie, in Dutch), European Urban Studies (MSc 4Cities), Geography of Globalisation, Cultural Urban Geography, Research Seminar, and Social and Economic Geography Field Trip (all MSc Geography). In addition, it is expected that the candidate can substantially contribute to a further strengthening of the research profile of Cosmopolis and the new Brussels Centre for Urban Studies.

Job profile

A PhD in geography or related discipline is required. Further requirements are: proven experience in teaching on a university level; relevant publications in academic journals; and an excellent knowledge of English. Good knowledge of Dutch, experience with project acquisition (local, national, international) and experience in supervising PhD’s is a plus. In case of equal suitability, priority will be given to female candidates.

Amount of FTE

This position is either an 0.5 FTE or 1.0 FTE position. International candidates (non-Belgian nationality, no previous work experience in Belgium, and PhD degree from a non-Belgian university) can apply for the 1.0 FTE position as they can be hired through a bursary scheme for a maximum of three years. Others can apply for the 0.5 FTE position and will be hired as regular employees for three years and with possibility for renewal. Pending funding approval of a submitted research proposal, this position can be extended with 0.3 FTE. It is also possible to combine this position with the advertised assistant/associate professorship position in spatial planning within the MSc in Urban Design and Spatial Planning (STeR*): http://vub.talentfinder.be/en/vacature/10908/we-2014-010–senior-academic-staff–100–department-of-geography-dggf/. In this case, the candidate should apply to both positions. If requested, the position can also be distributed across multiple people and split into smaller mandates (0.1-0.2 FTE).

Start of contract

The envisioned start of the contract is 1 October 2014.
